US Presidential Election : As the possibility of a Joe Biden-Donald Trump rematch in the upcoming US presidential election looms, concerns among America’s allies are growing. The fear is that regardless of the outcome, the US may become less dependable on the global stage. The divide in the electorate and congressional gridlock could lead the next president to focus more on domestic challenges, leaving international issues unaddressed.
US Presidential Election & fear of US allies
French President Emmanuel Macron has bluntly stated that America’s “first priority is itself.” The first Trump administration strained relationships with allies, especially in Europe, as Trump criticized leaders like Angela Merkel and Theresa May while praising autocrats such as Erdogan and Putin. Trump’s skepticism toward organizations like NATO persists, posing concerns for allies.
While Biden has prioritized support for Ukraine, his proclamation of “America is back” has faced challenges. Congressional Republicans have stalled military aid for Ukraine, and the US has been unable to contain conflicts in the Middle East.
Thomas Gift from the Centre on US Politics at University College London suggests that, regardless of the election outcome, the trend is toward a multipolar world where the US is not the indisputable superpower. Allied leaders refrain from direct comments on the election (US Presidential Election) but acknowledge the need to work with the eventual winner. Governments are quietly establishing links with the contenders’ political teams behind the scenes.
European NATO allies, concerned about the reliability of the US, are openly discussing the need to increase military spending and plan for an alliance without the United States. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has emphasized the importance of support for Ukraine and acknowledged that Germany, as the second-largest donor of military aid, cannot fill the gap if the US withdraws its support.
