Meta Opens Quest Operating System : Meta is sharing the operating system of its Quest headset with rival device makers including Microsoft for the first time, the company announced on Monday, in a bid to expand its influence in the emerging virtual and mixed reality industry.

The move will allow partner companies to build their headsets with Meta Horizon OS, a rebranded operating system that offers features such as gesture recognition, pass-through, scene understanding and spatial anchors for the devices running on it, the company said in a blog post.
The social media company said partners Asus and Lenovo will use the operating system to build devices tailored to specific activities.
Meta is also using it (Meta Opens Quest Operating System) to develop a limited edition version of the Quest headset “inspired by” Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console, according to the company’s statement.
The move underscores Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ambition to own the computing platform for virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) devices, similar to how Alphabet’s Google became a major player in the smartphone market by making its Android mobile operating system open source.
Meta’s VR business is one of the beneficiaries of this Google strategy, as Meta Horizon OS itself is Android-based.
VR and MR headsets have so far only been used to a limited extent, mainly by the gaming community and selected companies that use them for training or remote conferencing.
