AISIC : The Biden Administration on Thursday unveiled the formation of a new consortium aimed at advancing the safe development and deployment of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced the creation of the US AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC), which boasts the participation of over 200 entities, including leading AI companies such as OpenAI, Alphabet’s Google, Anthropic, and Microsoft. Notable members also include Meta Platforms (Facebook-parent), Apple, Amazon.com, Nvidia, Palantir, Intel, JPMorgan Chase, and Bank of America.

Raimondo emphasized the significant role of the US government in setting standards and developing tools to mitigate the risks associated with AI while harnessing its immense potential. The consortium, housed under the USAI Safety Institute (USAISI), includes a diverse range of participants, including BP, Cisco Systems, IBM, Hewlett Packard, Northrop Grumman, Mastercard, Qualcomm, Visa, major academic institutions, and government agencies.
This collaborative effort will address priority actions outlined in President Biden’s October AI executive order, focusing on the development of guidelines for red-teaming, capability evaluations, risk management, safety and security, and watermarking synthetic content. The practice of red-teaming, commonly used in cybersecurity, involves simulated testing to identify potential risks, with origins in US cold war simulations where the adversary was referred to as the “red team.”
In line with the commitment of major AI companies from the previous year, the consortium will work towards watermarking AI-generated content to enhance technology safety. President Biden’s executive order directed agencies to establish standards for testing, addressing chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, cyber, and security risks associated with AI.
The December announcement from the Commerce Department marked the initial step towards drafting key standards and guidance for the secure deployment and testing of AI. The AISIC represents the largest assembly of test and evaluation teams, focusing on laying the foundations for a “new measurement science in AI safety,” according to the Commerce Department.
