Google Unveils Gemma : In a strategic move following industry trends, Google introduced its latest family of artificial intelligence (AI) models named Gemma (Google Unveils Gemma) on Wednesday. These “open models” are designed to be accessible to external developers, allowing them to create their own AI software. Google has made critical technical data, including model weights, publicly available, aiming to attract software engineers to leverage its technology.

Notably, individuals and businesses can harness Gemma to build AI software without incurring any costs. The models are optimized for Google Cloud, providing an added incentive as first-time Cloud users receive $300 in credits. While Google has stopped short of declaring Gemma fully “open source,” it offers a gateway for developers to engage with its technology and boost the adoption of its profitable cloud division.
Gemma models are available in sizes of two billion or seven billion parameters, representing the values considered by the algorithm to generate output. It’s worth noting that Google has not extended the “open” designation to its larger, premier models known as Gemini.
The decision to keep Gemma (Google Unveils Gemma) under a more controlled environment suggests that Google may still retain influence over terms of use and ownership. This move comes amidst ongoing debates about the potential misuse of open-source AI, with proponents emphasizing its potential to democratize contributions and benefits in the field.
