Real-Money Gaming Apps : Google recently revealed its intentions to permit a broader array of real-money gaming (RMG) applications, even those not covered by existing licensing frameworks, on the Google Play Store in India, Mexico, and Brazil this year. The tech giant will also introduce a service fee for these apps.
In light of positive responses from users and developers following pilot programs, Google Play will expand support for additional RMG apps (Real-Money Gaming Apps) this year, encompassing game types and operators currently outside existing licensing frameworks. The enhanced RMG (Real-Money Gaming Apps) support is set to launch in June for developers in India, Mexico, and Brazil, with plans to extend the service to more countries in the future.
Google is also set to implement a new service fee model for subscription and in-app purchases associated with real-money games. Although specific details about the fee structure remain undisclosed, Google presently charges a service fee ranging from 15-30% on in-app purchases and app sales made through Google Play.
Notably, Google clarified that the service fee applies when a developer sells digital goods or services within their app. It is emphasized that only 3 percent of developers in India currently sell digital goods or services, making them subject to the service fee. For the majority of developers, the fees are 15 percent or less, positioning Google Play with the lowest rates among major app stores, thanks to the various pricing programs it offers.
This announcement coincides with a challenging period for Indian RMG (Real-Money Gaming Apps) firms coping with a 28 percent blanket tax on online gaming. Previously, skill gaming platforms paid an 18 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on platform fees, known as gross gaming revenue (GGR). The new rules, effective since October 1, do not differentiate between games of skill or chance.
In 2022, Google initiated a pilot program facilitating the distribution of daily fantasy sports (DFS) and rummy apps to users in India. This program concluded on September 28, 2023.
- As part of these developments, Google has extended the grace period for its RMG pilot program until June 30, 2024.
- Following this extension, developers will be able to distribute RMG apps on Google Play to users in India.
- It is emphasized that existing developer policies supporting user safety will remain unchanged during this transition period.
