2024 US Presidential : In a surprising turn of events on Tuesday (local time), former US President Donald Trump clinched victory in the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary, following his previous win in Iowa. Meanwhile, current US President Joe Biden emerged triumphant for the Democrats, despite abstaining from any campaign efforts.
Trump’s consecutive triumphs in the primaries set the stage for a potential rematch with Biden in the November 2024 presidential election (2024 US Presidential). Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and Trump’s rival, aimed to upset the balance in the crucial state but ultimately finished in second place.
Edison Research reported that Trump secured 52.3% of the vote, compared to Haley’s 46.6%, after tallying 14% of the votes, according to Reuters.
Biden secured victory in the New Hampshire Democratic primary as a write-in candidate, with his name not appearing on the ballot, and without actively campaigning in the state. This occurred despite Democrats defying party rules by holding their primary election in New Hampshire before South Carolina, as reported by the Associated Press.
Trump’s success in both Iowa and New Hampshire marked the first time a Republican achieved such a sweep since 1976, solidifying his position as a frontrunner for the presidential nomination.
The New Hampshire primary represented the initial one-on-one confrontation between Trump and Haley after the withdrawal of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who had been considered Trump’s main challenger. DeSantis endorsed the former President after dropping out.
Although Haley faced a setback in New Hampshire, she aims to mount a robust campaign in her home state of South Carolina on February 24. The former UN ambassador finished third in Iowa and was anticipated to present a formidable challenge, possibly securing a victory against Trump in her state.
Despite Trump’s victory in New Hampshire, exit polls highlighted potential obstacles in his election campaign. Approximately half of the Republican primary voters expressed concerns about Trump’s fitness to serve if he were convicted in the face of four sets of criminal charges, including attempts to overturn the 2020 election and alleged payments to an adult star to silence her about their alleged affair.
Meanwhile, According to Reuters- Edison’s exit poll (2024 US Presidential) projected Biden’s victory in the New Hampshire Democratic primary, but over two-thirds of Republican primary voters voiced dissatisfaction with the state of the American economy, categorizing it as either poor or not good.
